HVAC Maintenance Tips

How to Care for Your Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning System

Your HVAC system is some of the most complicated and important equipment in your home. It's usually comprised of your furnace and your central air conditioning system, as well as your ducts, vents, refrigerant lines, and other equipment that keeps your home comfortable, year around. Keeping these components tuned up, clean and maintained is vital to the health and longevity of your HVAC system.

Caring for this intricate system might seem overwhelming, but with these quick and easy steps you'll feel like an HVAC professional in no time.

  1. Replace the filters!
  2. It's an easy thing to forget, but replacing the filters of your HVAC system is one in the most important steps in maintaining your equipment. Each HVAC unit is different, so replace your filters on the schedule that your manufacturer recommends.

  3. Keep out debris!
  4. To keep debris out of your air conditioning unit after the summer season is over you can purchase a cover at the local hardware store. These can cost anywhere from $40 to $200. If you would rather DIY your air conditioning cover, you can make one using only duct tape and trash bags or drop cloths.

  5. Keep the vents clear!
  6. To maintain a healthy HVAC system you need to make sure the air can flow through the unit and out. Do a quick audit of the inside of your home to make sure that your registers and vents are not blocked by furniture, carpets, or drapes. Keeping these open and clean helps to ensure the air can move effectively and that your HVAC system can continue working efficiently.

  7. Call in the Professionals!
  8. There are some aspects of your HVAC maintenance that only a trained professional should handle. Make sure to have your HVAC system serviced annually. Additionally have your ductworks and vents cleaned professionally, especially if you can see debris, insects or any other blockages. These will increase the efficiency and life span of your system, not to mention helping to keep the air in your home cleaner.

If you have a problem with your HVAC system, check for blown fuses, tripped circuit breakers and proper power before calling for repairs. When your equipment is running poorly, it's likely that your home is less comfortable than you'd prefer and your energy bills are higher than you'd expected. Setting aside some time to follow these four maintenance tips can help your HVAC system stay both efficient and effective.
